It is with the greatest sadness that I report Karen #MarieWilliams funeral was today in Christchurch after dying just after midnight on the 27th of February NZDST surrounded by family in the Hospice in Palmeston North where she had been recuperating after her chemotherapy was stopped two weeks earlier.

I have typed out the Eulogy that I gave today and have posted it on the Convention's website (see blow).

By mutual agreement between myself and Marie's sister, we withheld announcing Marie's death and funeral details until after tonight's family dinner had occurred here in Christchurch.

My thanks go also to @Fir McGrevey Gilmore for attending the funeral and to @Fiona Brown for offering her condolences prior to the convention.

Short Story Competition

It is the 5th of November 2015 AD.

The Sun rose at 7am and will set at 4:27pm this afternoon.

On the grassed area outside your factory office window, workers have unearthed a small wooden chest in the trench they are digging which they bring in and set on your desk. There is a padlock still slung to the latch, but it was broken long ago. A brass plate attached to the chest reads "2357AD"

Inside is a cylinder made of brass; its ends have been sealed with wax and now rotted cloth. After carefully opening the seal, you retrieve a single scroll. One side has writing while the other side has a detailed technical drawing on one half of the page and the other half is a hand drawn picture.

There is a glass bottle with a transparent liquid that has a soft colour to it. The bottle has an ornate etching on one surface, but you cannot ascertain its meaning. It has been similarly sealed but the label has long since perished.

Silt has permeated the chest and you can find no other discernible objects.

The scroll details the events that occurred the night the chest was buried nearly 150 years earlier...

In one of the paragraphs, you must describe either a cheerleader's costume or a Superhero's costume (or both) as it is mentioned in the scroll and what their relevance is.

The Short Story Competition is open to financial members of the convention and must be of a Steam Punk theme. Submissions must be no more than 5,000 words in length. The competition launched, the 5th of November 2014 and will close on the 3rd of March 2015 at 6pm NZDST.

The winner will be announced at the closing ceremony of Reconnaissance on Easter Monday the 6th of April, 2015.

"By submitting to the Short Story Comp you agree that your submission may be printed in multiple mediums as the ConCom sees fit." What that means is: The winner of the SSC will have their story included in the post convention con book. We may also publish the winner's short story on this website and we may also ask the winner to read out their winning short story at the closing ceremony, at which point the works revert back to their respective owners.

"The Judges decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into."

Art - Illustration Competition

The Art - Illustration competition A re-imagined Night Before Christmas

Marie W In the grounds of Bunson’s Twas the night before Christmas, when all through Steam-Punkville
Not a creature was stirring, not even Bumbersnoot.
The airships were slung low by the chimneys with care,
Their fireboxes raked down, the ash there was none there.
Blair Athol coal and Dennison Coal too like the majestic steam locomotives did they all use too.

Traditional New Zealand Christmas tale The students were nestled all snug in their bunk beds,
While visions of treacle tarts danced in their heads.
And Mademoiselle in her ‘kerchief, and I, Vieve in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.

Winter Village Toy Shop - Christmas tree bench and minifigs watermark.jpg When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
Surely the mechanical’s couldn’t be the matter?
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the Pinkerton’s sash.

Snow covered village and light house The Currituck Light on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But Wellington Thorndon Book’s beloved car being towed by eight Prancing Ponies that did need shoeing it would appear?

Steam Punk Snowflakes (cogs) Was the little old driver Lord Maccon, so lively and quick?
I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.
More rapid than The Great Eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

Doctor Who Tardis and Daleks as Santa's sleigh and reindeer "Now Bill! now, Stybba! now, Prancer and Arod!
On, Fatty Lumpkin! On, Bumpkin! on, on Hasufel and Windfola!
To the squeak deck! Past the blue Police Box standing lone sentry by the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"

Toy village lit up in low light As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
So up to the squeak deck the coursers they flew,
With the tumble-seat full of Toys, and St Nicholas too.

Stars and Strips top hats And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The Picklemen, the Pinkerton’s, the Fly-away men and even the House of Usher too were all tip-toeing to the Pub for a brew or perhaps two.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound – surely using the door would be totally confound?
"Wait for us!"Called out the Chitterton's as they tip toed away too..

Winter Village Light House and frozen stream with stone bridge He was dressed belt buckles, clasps and safety harnesses all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes and ridding goggles were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler, just opening his steam pressure jet-pack.

His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a fine toothed cog or gear with wide teeth.
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!

Judge dredd and Santa clause He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, er, of the Rivendell elves I’d say at a guess...
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself – this poem it isn’t a mess!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
And not once a mention of Judge Dredd.

Christmas Tree cog ornaments He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the fishnet-stockings, then turned with a jerk.
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose, had he not heard of the æther-gate I did pose?!

Steampunk_Santa_by_CyborgNecromancer.jpg He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"

Octopus Christmas Tree Ornaments With Kind thanks and apologies to Gail Carriger, Philippa Ballantine, Tee Morris, the BBC and Verity Lambert, 2000 AD comics, J. R. R. Tolkien and of course Clement Clarke Moore via http://www.carols.org.uk/twas_the_night_before_christmas.htm

The Art - Illustration Competition is open to financial members of the convention and must be of a Steam Punk theme based on the poem above. Submissions must be sent as a high resolution digital image to the convention's address of your work which can be in any artistic medium. You must be prepared to bring to, and display at, the convention your work of art over the entire convention. The competition launched, the 15th of December 2014 and will close on the 17th of March 2015 at 6pm NZDST.

The winner will be announced at the closing ceremony of Reconnaissance on Easter Monday the 6th of April, 2015.

"By submitting to the Art - Illustration Comp you agree that your submission may be printed in multiple mediums as the ConCom sees fit." What that means is: The winner of the Art - Illustration Comp will have their work included in the post convention con book. We may also publish the winner's work on this website and we may also ask the winner to give a brief talk on their work at the closing ceremony, at which point the works revert back to their respective owners.

YA - Young Adult stream

The YA - Young Adult stream - here's a sneak peak
    Easter Sunday

  • 9am - Victorian Parlour Games
  • 10am - World building
  • Garth Smith, Paul Gilbert and others will be discussing the challenges of gathering the information required to build your world - do you wait and write later? Write first and contradict yourself?
  • NOON - Where is the humour in YA? Gail Carriger is joined by Simon Litten and Maree Pavletich in discussing Humour in YA and where did it go with the focus in recent times of more serious stories aimed at YA audiences.
  • 2pm - FFANZ is the anachronism for Fan Fund Australia / New Zealand. Each alternate year New Zealanders get to send some one to Australia's NatCon (next year in Brisbane) through Fan Fund raising such as the Auction etc. Meet the FFANZ Delegate - David McDonald who hails from Melbourne and is one of the few Authors at this years NatCon who isn't launching a book. David will be on a number of panels such as the Doctor Who - Looking Forwards and the Religion in SF panels.
  • 3pm - Fan Fiction: A look at Fan Fiction online and why some (if not most of it) shouldn't be there.
  • 4pm - The Spiel in Essen - Louise McCully gives us a trip report on her experiences at the Spiel in Essen - a fairly large board gaming venue.

Minions

It wouldn't be a convention with-out minions who work tirelessly behind the scenes to help make the convention an enjoyable experience

    • Alicia Ponder has stood down as the Written - Print Media co-ordinator on the 3rd of November citing she is busy with SFFANZ - Sir Julius Vogel Awards duties and her own book duties. We reluctantly accepted her standing down formally on the 5th of November.
    • Better late than never, please make welcome ? as the CosPlay Co-ordinator's Minion.

One Day Writer's Workshop

Pip and Tee will hold a One Day Writer's Workshop which will look at the lessons they have learnt going from amateur to semi and finally professional writers; how to write, what to write and who to write for.

Pip advises: We're going to be working on creating great dialogue and characters. We're going to be talking about it, practising it, and then opening up for questions. So if you have a character or some dialogue you want to discuss, feel free to bring it along.

Cost is $ 60 per person for attendees of the convention as a sperate cost to the convention membership. Numbers are strictly limited, so first in, best dressed.

Other Planned Events:

It wouldn't be a convention without events:

  • Guests of Honour Speeches
    • 11am Sunday - Gail Carriger will be interviewed by Andrew Ivamy
    • 11am Saturday - Pip Ballantine and Tee Morris
    • 2pm Sunday - Fan GoH Alan Parker
    • 10am Saturday - Norman Cates will give us a LARP report and talk about other items of interest in his life
  • Panels
  • Autograph Sessions - you want me to sign WHAT? How many??
  • Floating Markets

The Floating Market will occur on Sunday morning from 9am to Noon with set up from 8am onwards in the Gallifrey Atrium. The markets will occur while there are panels going on, so there may be rushes at the top of the hour.

The Floating market will be set up in the 600 Foyer - a short stroll from the Sudima reception area. The cost of a table is $ 10 for a fan selling "stuff" and $20 for one or $ 30 for two tables for a trader selling articles such as clothing, jewellery, or similar. The 600 Foyer is an area I refer to as the Gallifrey Atrium - an area that has some wonderful natural light streaming through some remarkable high windows a short stroll from reception.

The floating market will be followed by the Auction where people can Auction off more singular items, To avoid the Auction getting bogged down in one and two dollar books, we ask that only books of merit be included, for example they are autographed or are a rare out of print edition.

We can confirm Velvet Cherry will have a trade table. As Fiona Brown is our CosPlay co-ordinator and will be doing a whole day of paneling, she gets first pick on location, then it's up in the air where people will go.
Want a trade table at the Floating Market? Send us an email

So far we have the following confirmed tables:
    • Velvet Cherry 2
    • Bookwormz

In order to get access, you need to be a member of SFFANZ, or Reconnaissance. You need a Google account. Google accounts are easy to create, and can be created with a minimum of information. You can even create one with an existing email address, rather than creating a new address that is Google specific.
